Thailand
Located in South East Asia, and bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia, Thailand was the most visited country in the world in 2013.
Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, has also received accolades as a tourist destination. You can visit the impressive temples, shop at the magnificent floating markets, or just party through the night down the Kohsan Road. Bangkok really is the city that never sleeps!
Our volunteer house is based in Chiang Mai, where you can embrace the Buddhist culture, while volunteering with novice monks. Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second city behind Bangkok, and is a perfect example of what makes Thailand unique. Set in the foothills of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai maintains Thai tradition, despite the influx of western influence. It is home to over 300 spectacular Buddhist Temples, some dating back as far as the 13th century. In the evening, Chiang Mai has a vibrant nightlife, including many karaoke bars, live music venues, and numerous bars and clubs.
If nature is more your thing, Thailand will not disappoint. Head just out of Chiang Mai and you can visit the Elephant Nature Park, home to over 30 rescued Asian Elephants, or you could walk through the local National Parks, which provide amazing scenery and panoramic views across the city. Whatever your area of interest, Thailand and Chiang Mai will be able to provide!
Aside from the beautiful scenery, amazing attractions and vibrant nightlife, one of the things that everyone who visits Thailand takes away is the friendliness of the Thai people. Thailand is sometimes known as “the land of smiles,” and the welcoming nature of the communities you will volunteer with will certainly enforce that reputation. You will form strong friendships with the local people, which will make leaving Thailand on the final day that bit more difficult!
